What the camera does with what it sees.

The short version
A camera pointed at you in a gym is a serious thing to ask for, so this page describes what happens today rather than what is intended. Video you upload is stored, and it stays. The retention preference records what you asked for but does not yet enforce it. Audio is never captured. Deletion is by request, done by hand.
Video
The design is that footage is transient: the camera exists to measure movement, movement is fully described by where your joints were over time, and once a set has been analysed the video has served its purpose. That is the intention and it is worth stating, because it is what the product is being built towards.
It is not what happens today. A clip you upload is transferred to our storage, analysed, and then kept. Nothing deletes it. There is a retention preference in the app (keep everything, keep flagged clips, keep for a window) and it faithfully records your choice without anything acting on it yet. Assume your footage stays until this paragraph says otherwise.
What we do keep
- Your account. Email address and credentials, so you can sign in.
- Your training profile. Name, date of birth, sex and body weight. These change how some measurements are interpreted.
- Derived measurements. Rep counts, ranges, timings, scores and the coaching text generated from them. This is what makes a trend possible over months, and it is the thing the product is for.
Other people in the frame
A gym is a shared room, and a wide lens sees more of it than the person training. The analysis only cares about one set of joints, the ones doing the movement. Everything else in view is incidental, and is not identified, tracked or stored.
Analytics
Product analytics are off by default and can be turned on in Settings.
Deleting your data
Deletion is not self-service yet. There is no endpoint behind it. Until recently the app hid that behind a dialog promising permanent removal; it now says so plainly.
Email us and we will remove your account and every session analysed under it, by hand. We are building the one-tap version; until it exists, this page will keep saying that it does not.
Where this is going
Keeping video is the easy engineering decision and the wrong product decision. It runs to terabytes, it makes us the custodian of footage of people training, and it buys nothing the measurements do not already give us. Storing derived signal and discarding raw signal is the rule the system is meant to be built around.
Meanwhile it is a rule we are describing, not one we are keeping. This page gets updated when the code does, in the same change.
